Winter MeasuresWinter Measures Halfway through the winter, Britain seems to be enjoying a slight respite before another cold snap sets in. Now is a good time to make sure that your home is in good condition to survive the cold and save you from having to make any claims on your home insurance policy. If you haven’t winter-proofed your house yet this holiday it is still definitely worth it. Protecting your home against cold weather will probably bring down the price of your home insurance premiums, so, whilst it might cost a little bit in the short term, it is an investment worth making. One home insurance firm alone had to deal with over 30,000 claims for wind damage last year, costing as much as £17 million in repair costs. A bigger threat, however, is that of burst or frozen pipes. Last year the same firm experienced more than 20,000 claims, costing an average of £2,000 each to fix. If you are intending on going away during the winter period it is important that you don’t turn your central heating off, also make sure that your loft hatch is left open to let heat up into the loft space and that the pipes all have suitable amounts of insulation. Another thing that you should consider is whether your roof has survived the winter winds intact; if you have lost any tiles make sure that you get them replaced sooner rather than later. The cost of replacing a tile is minimal compared to some of the damage that the elements can cause if your roof is unprotected, as well as the extra costs of heating if some of the warmth of your house is escaping through gaps in your roof. In addition to steps to protect the house against the elements it is definitely a good idea to make sure that you have an emergency kit somewhere in the house where you can easily access it should something happen to go wrong. Home insurance is a vital commodity, and particularly with the current economic conditions it is important that you make your money go as far as possible when it comes to your insurance policy. If you are looking at getting a new policy or even renewing the one that you already have; take a look at Co-Op’s portfolio of home insurance policies for some start-up ideas.
